Summer break is supposed to feel like a break and it should! No one's asking you to run a tiny summer school out of your living room. But a little bit of "brain snacks" here and there can make a big difference come fall. The good news: it doesn't take much, and it definitely doesn't need to feel like work for you or your child.

Try a Weekly Theme

Preschoolers love repetition and structure, even during a loose summer schedule. Picking one simple theme each week gives your days a little shape without locking you into a strict routine. A few easy ideas:

Ocean Week

• Read a book or two about sea creatures

• Make "coral reef" art with tissue paper and glue

• Build an ocean scene with blocks and toy animals

• Bonus: look for shells if you take a trip to the beach

Construction Week

• Read a book about trucks or building sites

• Build structures with blocks or LEGOs

• Make a pretend "construction site" in the backyard with sand or dirt
